Cabinets are the key to an efficient as well as organised kitchen not to forget they add a flair to the kitchen as well. Therefore it is important to choose wisely when it come to kitchen cabinets.

It is important to choose the type of wood you want and the colour for the cabinets. These should complement the wall paint or colour as well as the texture. Some will want all cabinets to have the same colour throughout the house which is worth considering. Others may feel differently and opt for cabinets that go with the paint in each room. Depending on the space available, ensure that the work triangle is easy to navigate because functionality is as important as style. Make sure that you utilise as much space as you can for storage including the island or peninsula.

After this it is important to decide the designs of the cabinets bearing in mind that other designs such as the raised panel doors tend to collect more dust therefore require more cleaning. Also to be considered is whether to use paint or stain. It is wise to know that stain is easier to touch up compared to paint. Opt for paint or stain with a glaze for easy cleaning (just a wipe with a cloth will do the trick). Wood which features the grain such as oak do not show scratches or touch ups especially if they are dark colored. There are open shelf cabinets which do well when you have utensils and gadgets to show off but they also require constant cleaning and dusting. Closed shelf cabinets are more common with glass being used for display purposes.

To protect the cabinet under your sink use cabinets with an all plywood construction or insert a tray below the sink to trap and catch all leakages that may happen. This will ensure the long life of your cabinets and keep them looking good. If your kitchen seems dark and does not let in much light, you can consider having under-cabinet lighting.

Remember Functionality is as important as style!
