A galley kitchen consists of two parallel runs of units forming a central corridor in which to work. It makes for a very efficient kitchen preferred even by chefs. Storage and work space is also optimized.
There are cases where the kitchen is narrow but long making it hard to include a peninsula or island. This will also mean that the U and L shape is not as ideal for such a small space. The galley kitchen design is the solution to this as they are designed for narrow spaces. It is also ideal for medium sized kitchens where an island can be included or used to make an asymmetrical galley.
The Galley kitchen does not traditionally include sitting in the kitchen. In recent times, the galley kitchen has been modified especially where one has space. This has seen the inclusion of an island between the working spaces where the open plan concept would have been used or where there is more space. Others include a table and chairs between the parallel work areas also promoting conversations in the kitchen. It is believed that the U shaped kitchen design is inspired by the Galley kitchen design.
The Galley kitchen is ideal for those who want a very functional kitchen even with small space. Storage and work space are optimized meaning no space is wasted. Usually the cabinets go very high up the wall therefore increasing storage space. The small distance between work areas means efficiency in terms of movement, at times you just have to face the other side without moving much.
